About the event
It's customary to celebrate Lag B'Omer with outdoor activities. Beginning on the second night of Passover, Jews start counting a seven-week period known as the Omer, which leads up to the next major holiday, Shavuot. Historically, this time between the two holidays was a somewhat somber period because of a plague that occurred thousands of years ago. According to tradition, the plague lifted on the thirty-third day; Lag is shorthand for 33, hence the 33rd day of the Omer.
(The word “Lag” is made of the Hebrew letters lamed (ל) and gimel(ג), which together have the numerical value of 33.)
